Excellent article in the business section of the TR about government spending and the cuts that need made. Specifically, the education department (owwww, someone else thinks that teachers make too much money). In today's economy, there is no way for the government to continue to throw money at lost causes (such as the public school systems). Cut fast and hard and do it now. Once the overpaid teachers gnash their teeth and throw a hissy fit, either replace or have them go back to work. Our kids education can't suffer anymore than it already has.

Question #1.)
How are you going to attract quality college graduates by underpaying teachers?

Question #2.)
Salty Dog for a good Steeler Bar, right Hok? What's your friend's name?

Answer #1) Let me pose the question back to you thunder. How has PT been able to attract quality college graduates by previously "underpaying" teachers?? Unless, of course, PT HASN'T been underpaying or you are referring that we don't have quality teachers at PT. THAT fact should make for an interesting teacher's union meeting when you identify the teachers that are NOT quality teachers.

#2) Buxy's Salty Dog Saloon in OC, MD is a GREAT Steeler bar. Ask for Buxy - he's the owner and a fraternity brother of mine.

Answer #1 PT has lost quality college graduates due to underpaying them.

Answer #2 Buxy was on vacation but he has a nice place. The Steeler Nation is alive nad well in OC, MD!!!

so thunder (welcome back by the way) the quality grads that we lost by not paying enough, those jobs were filled with non-quality grads? Is this what you are saying? PT fills jobs each year and during the year. Which positions were not filled with quality teachers??

Buxy lives in OC. Where the heck would he go on vacation????

The experienced quality grads were replaced with rookies. It takes some time to get experience, hence the low starting salary.

Maybe Buxy came to the land of milk and honey?

So what you are saying is that these new "rookies" are not quality teachers? Even though some of the "rookies" may actually have been experienced teachers coming into PT.

Please tell us why the "rookies" are not quality teachers. I am eager to know.

Thunder,
If we are unable to attract quality teaching talent with what we are paying, what does that say about your teaching skills? Shocked

Rookies are quality teachers. They just need experience. Not quite 19 years to reach a career rate, but they need some time, that's all.

What it says about my teaching is that I'm dedicated, not just to teaching, but to our community too.

Lets keep the best of the best right here at PT.

Thunder,

Again you contradict yourself and have agreed with me. PT IS able to attract and retain top talent with the price that we pay today. There is no need to overpay. The district does not need to increase any pay for teaching services. In fact, the district needs to start REDUCING pay and see who stays. When they see a mass exodus of teachers, then they know they have hit the sweet spot on pricing for teaching services.

Pay the piper. The PT teachers will never agree to an inferior contract.

Teachers need to agree to a "real world" contract. Starting with a 25% pay reduction and working a total of at least 8 hours would be good for starters.

Eliminate the pensions - go to 403B with the district kicking in no more than 5%

Increase the amount of teacher subsidy for health benefits. Paying about $500 per family per month is a good start.

We'll start small (by addressing and eliminating first at PT) then move on to Harrisburg.
